CHUVA OBLÍQUA
[8-3-1914]

I

O vulto do cais e a estrada nítida e calma

Não sei quem me sonho...
Súbito toda a água do mar do porto é transparente

****
Traversing this landscape is my dream of an infinite port
And the colour of the flowers is the transparency of the sails of great ships
That cast off from the jetty dragging through the water for shade
The hulks in sunshine of those ancient trees...

The port that I dream of is sombre and pale
And this landscape is full of sunshine from this side...
But in my mind this day's sun is a sombre port
And the ships which leave the port are these trees in the sun...

Liberated in duality, I have released myself from the landscape downwards...
The hulk of the jetty and the clear and calm roadway
Rising upwards erect like a wall,
And the ships pass through within the trunks of the trees
With a vertical horizontality,
And drop moorings into the water through the leaves inwards one by one ...

I do not know whom I dream myself ...
Suddenly all the water of the sea of the port is transparent
And I see on the bottom, like an enormous print there unfurled,
The whole of this landscape, a line of trees, a road burningin that port,
And the shadow of a craft more ancient than the port which passes by
Between my dream of the port and my seeing this landscape
And it comes up close to me, and enters inside me,

And passes through to the other side of my soul...

Capri is an Italian island off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic.

Features of the island are the Marina Piccola (Small Harbor), the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone masses called Sea Stacks that stand out of the sea (the Faraglioni), Anacapri, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas.

Capri is in the region of Campania, Province of Naples. The City of Capri is the main centre of population on Capri. It has two adjoining harbours, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande (the main port of the island). The separate commune of Anacapri is located high on the hills to the west.

The etymology of the name Capri can be traced back to the Greeks, the first recorded colonists to populate the island. This means that "Capri" was probably not derived from the Latin "Capreae" (goats), but rather the Greek "Kapros" (wild boar).
